On a day full of sunshine and showers the people of Mablethorpe co-created a street art wall full of inspiration about their town. This project is part of the LCVS Placetalk Community Listening Project gathering conversations with local people in the Mablethorpe area on what matters to them in their community.
Placetalk wanted to do something that young people and young families could get involved in, they were also very keen on it being something that could be “owned” by the community.
Placetalk standard questions were asked:
- What matters to you about Mablethorpe?
- Can you think of one positive word you can give us about Mablethorpe
As part of the project positive words or meaningful messages about Mablethorpe were also captured and included on the final piece of art. The artwork has many layers to it and families were encouraged to take photographs of their child’s work during the day so it wasn’t lost in the final piece
A special thanks to Image Skool who facilitated the day alongside us for their outstanding engagement skills for instilling confidence in people to “just have a go”. The enthusiasm of the young people and families who took part was outstanding.
Also to ISG for funded the activity who are the building contractors for the new Leisure centre in Mablethorpe due to open sometime in July
Engagement:
- 88 engaged with over 24 years of age
- 116 engaged with under 24 years of age.
- All together there were 224 people who either part or fully engaged and by this, I mean who either had a full or part conversation with us, had a go at spray painting or who just stopped had a look and/or took a photograph.
- 173 people (around 140 of these were local residents) took part in creating the 24ft x 4ft wall as part of at the SO festival, Mablethorpe on 16th June.
- 56 fully engaged conversations had about what matters to people in Mablethorpe and 22 shared a positive word or message about Mablethorpe which were captured and used on the final piece of art.
- There were also 14 families who were not local who haven’t been counted in the above numbers.
The wall will be displayed in various locations around Mablethorpe, as well as on large prints and bookmarks.
To cater for the enthusiasm of young people taking part, there will be a series of six weekly Street Art Workshops for young people in the area to learn street art techniques and designs. The workshops will start in September and if your aged between 11-19 years and would like to be involved in these workshops, please email placetalk@lincolnshirecvs.org.uk
