The Butterfly Project

*THIS PROJECT IS NOW CLOSED FOR ENTRIES*

SUMMARY

The Butterfly Project is a creative community engagement project for people across East Lindsey to engage with during the Coronavirus pandemic & lockdown in the run up to this year’s online SOfa Fest on Saturday 1 August 2020. The project is open to everyone – we want you to design & send in your own butterflies which will then become part of a specially created short film by award-winning video artist Barret Hodgson.

The project is about being a small part of something big, something special that celebrates creativity, community, beauty, freedom and self-expression. It reflects the idea of being trapped and eventually released, of going from caterpillar to butterfly and also represents the idea of the ‘Butterfly Effect’ – one small action here can lead to a much bigger impact elsewhereThe Butterfly Project is being run by the Different Light Collective, the guys behind Spilsby Light Night.

DETAILS

Whoever you are and whether you think of yourself as ‘arty’ or not we want you to design your own creative butterflies from one of our two simple templates that can be downloaded at the bottom of this page. You can also email butterfly@different-light.co.uk or call Project Producer Simon Hollingworth on 07795 416149 or, if you prefer, write to The Different Light Collective c/o Spilsby Sessions House, Church Street, Spilsby, Lincolnshire PE23 5DY to request one or more templates which we will then send to you.

Both of the Butterfly Project templates have the same outline and are the same size, but one is just the outline so you can be as creative as you want within the butterfly shape and the other has additional shapes & lines, as suggestions for more of a ‘colouring in’ exercise (suggested examples below). The pdf templates (download links are at the bottom of this article) can be used in any number of creative ways within a computer or iPad programme, or you can print them off and then use any kind of material and any kind of style you like, including pencils, paints, crayons, collage materials … anything!

Once completed, all digital designs should be emailed directly to butterfly@different-light.co.uk. Versions on paper need to be scanned or photographed and then emailed to the same address. If that is not possible then you can post them to The Different Light Collective c/o Spilsby Sessions House, Church Street, Spilsby, Lincolnshire PE23 5DY. Please note that any originals sent to us will not be returned unless a self-addressed envelope is included!

The finished short film will show the butterfly images from individual members of the community gradually coming together to form one giant butterfly – a creative and beautiful expression and demonstration of how we really are all in this together of how when we all work together we’re stronger and can achieve more.

DEADLINE

Butterfly templates can now be downloaded at any time and the deadline for sending them all to the Different Light Collective to be included in the Butterfly film is Sunday 12 July 6pm. We cannot guarantee that any butterflies received after this time will be included in the film.

Happy creating everyone – we can’t wait to see all your beautiful butterflies!
